On the edge of the city park in downtown Kanazawa, Korinkyo used to be an art gallery — and with its industrial-chic look and its high-arched windows letting in abundant natural light, it still looks the part, even though it’s been transformed into a minimalist boutique hotel with a focus on Japanese art and design. Rooms are bright and airy with a pale white, beige, and gray color palette, exposed beams, curving walls, vintage pieces, and ivory-tiled bathrooms with walk-in showers and freestanding tubs; many details, from teacups to bathrobes, were created by local artisans. Interiors are perfumed with delicate fragrances from the hotel’s on-site distillery. Up on the rooftop, a pair of open-air cypress baths are a wonderful spot for a relaxing soak with views over the treetops.
