Anantara decided against starting from scratch for its first property in Ireland, opting instead to snap up a Dublin landmark — the waterfront Marker Hotel on Grand Canal Square — and transform it into an ultra-modern luxury hotel. The Portuguese architect Aires Mateus took inspiration from the island’s rugged coastal landscape in his original designs for the geometric building, which resembles a rock formation eroding over time, and the interiors are striking and somewhat cave-like, with striking cantilevers and angular shapes framing the city’s largest hotel lobby. Rooms are sleek and contemporary, with floor-to-ceiling windows, moody charcoal-hued walls, and marble bathrooms with soaking tubs. The Anantara Spa features an enclosed infinity pool — well suited to Dublin’s climate — but the hotel’s crowning glory is the rooftop bar: with a clever indoor-outdoor layout and views of the Irish Sea, it’s a hit in all seasons.
