The California Gold Rush town of Grass Valley, in the Sierra foothills, is something of a waystation for travelers between San Francisco and the mountains. But the Holbrooke Hotel makes a compelling case as a destination unto itself. It’s the region’s longest-operating hotel, but it’s not stuck in the past — the rooms, both in the original hotel and the adjoining carriage house, are full of historical personality but also filled with modern comforts. The Golden Gate Saloon is not just a bar but a restaurant as well, and it’s joined by the Iron Door, a speakeasy-style cellar lounge.
