Ka'ana Resort
It’s by some distance the most upscale lodging in the area, its seventeen rooms understated yet plush, and divided into four categories: the standard “Balam” rooms around the pool, with their queen beds and plasma televisions, the free-standing queen casitas flanking the garden path, the master casitas with their private gardens and outdoor showers, and the private pool villas, complete with dedicated housemen.
The move toward the high end of the market doesn’t compromise Ka’ana’s relationship with its environment. Environmental sustainability is a top concern, along with cultural preservation; the spa employs the services of Cayo’s last remaining Mayan shaman. The cuisine is similarly local and sustainable, much of it drawn from the hotel’s organic garden. And it’s in the interface with its surroundings that Ka’ana truly shines — a top-quality hotel experience is worth remarking upon, but it’s the archaeological expeditions, the rainforest canopy tours, the river kayak or horseback treks, that make the experience truly extraordinary.
How to get there:
Ka’ana Boutique Resort & Spa is located 116 kilometers from Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE). Airport transfers are available for $175, plus tax for up to 4 guests, each way.

Our room was large and its setting in a lush garden, lit by candles at night was nice. The tour to Tikal lead by Hugo was wonderful.

This is a beautiful property with simple yet lovely rooms. We were upgraded from a Balam Suite to a Queen Casita thanks to our Tablet Plus membership. All of the rooms are spaced out in such a way that you feel like you are in your own private little house in the jungle - yet you are close to all of the amenities of the hotel. We enjoyed massages at the spa one of the days - it is a very simple spa with a small menu (no facials or body wraps). The food at the restaurant was very good (the pork chop and the fry jacks were our favorite dishes). All of the staff we interacted with were top notch - we were always greeted warmly each day and asked about our adventures each evening. No request was too small - I got the feeling the word 'no' was not in the vocabulary of each member of staff.

Lovely staff. Delicious menu. Quaint surroundings. Convenient to ruins.
