The typical Tulum boutique hotel is set right on the beach, and it’s not hard to see the appeal of that approach. But for a stay that’s more centered on nightlife than on communing with nature, Tulum’s town center offers an increasing number of options — none, perhaps, quite so moody and atmospheric as Aroma Tulum, a hotel whose décor might not look out of place in New York, were there not a slightly suspicious number of tropical plants on display.

The exteriors? Black, as are the walls and ceilings of the suites, and even the chaises longues that line the rooftop garden. Aroma leaves thatched-roof kitsch to the eco-resorts down by the beach — which is, incidentally, a mere fifteen minutes away. Here, however, what you’ll find are polished concrete floors, modernist furniture, and a look that’s more geared to the hours after sunset.

Beyond breakfast, there’s no restaurant, but the hotel’s urban setting means there are any number within a few minutes’ walk. The bar is a stylish space that spills out into the garden outside, and it’s not out of the question that there’ll be live music or a DJ on any given night.
