Romania’s wild landscapes aren’t well known outside its borders, but it’s time for that to change. Atra Doftana, on the shores of Lake Paltinu in the Doftana Valley, is an inventive architectural statement — it’s an unapologetically modern building, but is built into the hillside to avoid making too much of its profile. From within its contemporary, minimalist rooms, the lake is the main attraction, thanks to perfectly framed views from floor-to-ceiling windows. There’s a fine-dining restaurant that makes liberal use of hyperlocal ingredients, and despite the feeling of seclusion, Atra Doftana is just an hour and a half from Bucharest.
