More and more, Sapporo is taking its place as the cultural gateway to the island of Hokkaido at large and not just the birthplace of a certain rice lager. Makes sense, then, that the former Sapporo brewery site is now a thriving entertainment and shopping destination, and that Hotel Sosei Sapporo MGallery chose to put down roots here. Inside, it’s a maximalist-chic exercise in arches, sumptuous upholstery, and subtly steampunk furnishings. Rooms and suites balance it out with an upscale spin on traditional Japanese mainstays (think wall paneling and whisper-quiet ambience). After all, “sosei” roughly translates to “revival” or “rejuvenation” — just the ticket after sampling the namesake brew.
