On an island filled with glamorous hotels, Canaves Oia Suites is in the top tier. Maybe it’s the spectacular setting high over the Aegean Sea, or the sleek, spacious suites with designer furnishings, each with a private pool; maybe it’s the intimate scale and the air of exclusivity. Run by the Chaidemenos family, who practically invented the concept of luxury lodgings on Santorini — they’ve been turning centuries-old cave dwellings into modern guest rooms since the 1980s — the hotel is part of the Canaves Collection. It’s built right into volcanic cliffs in the village of Oia, and each of its suites, as well as its infinity pool, indoor-outdoor spa, and restaurant, features a sweeping view over the caldera.

The look is modern Cycladic, with whitewashed walls, clean lines, and gently curving archways framing the sea and the sky. All suites have an open-plan layout with airy living areas and large, sunny terraces with plunge pools or, in the case of some of the top-level suites, infinity-edge pools. The decor is sophisticated but simple, with a down-to-earth color palette and lots of wood, stone, and glass. Some suites have built-in sofas positioned in front of huge picture windows, and others have freestanding tubs with water views. All feature modern bathrooms with walk-in rainfall showers, custom bath products, and high-quality terry robes. Breakfasts and candlelit dinners can be arranged on the suites’ private terraces or enjoyed in the gorgeous clifftop restaurant, one of the island’s finest sunset spots.
