Originally an aristocratic residence in the heart of Marrakech’s 10th century medina, Riad Botanica now blends classic Moroccan design with a modern Australian aesthetic thanks to its cross-cultural owners Mohammed and Angela Mellak. The duo has set out to create more of a home than a hotel, with just six guest rooms that draw influences from their respective homelands, from the Moroccan arched doorways, handcrafted latticed cedar doors, and colorful tadelakt walls to the patterned wallpapers and textiles by Australian designer Florence Broadhurst.

Outside, the courtyard sits center stage as per Morocco’s traditional architecture and is home to a blue zellige tiled pool surrounded by daybeds, Moroccan beni ourain cushions and shaded by an orange tree for poolside lazing. It’s also a relaxing al fresco spot for dining on the riad’s seasonal, market menu of tagines and Moroccan salads, and there’s a rooftop terrace with sun loungers and a bar for sunset mocktails.

The team can also organize on-property activities such as mint tea masterclasses and storytelling soirées that continue a 1000-year-old Moroccan tradition, or ask them about balloon rides, shopping tours, or to open up their Marrakech address book for some insider recommendations.
