Set in central Lisbon’s Baixa-Chiado, in a warehouse from the 19th century — back when warehouses were rather more ornate than they are today — the Ivens is appealing enough from the outside. But it’s only once you’re inside that it reveals its true character as a playfully stylish, understatedly luxe boutique hotel. In the rooms the historical architecture provides the framework for the thoroughly contemporary décor, while the hotel’s upscale Italian restaurant and its two bars — one a seafood-focused crudo bar, the other a classic cocktail spot — take things in a more ornately retro direction.
