Nicknamed Slovenia’s Tuscany, Brda is where the Mediterranean meets the Alps — an idea that sounds almost too good to be true, and one that sounds even better when you realize it’s also a wine region. Set in the rolling hills, framed by terraced gardens, olive groves, and 200-year-old vineyards, the elegant Peterc Vineyard Estate is a luxurious adults-only hotel attended by its owners, a local husband-and-wife duo with a penchant for art, outdoor living, and great food and wine.
There are just a handful of rooms, all with parquet floors, large windows, French-inspired decor, original artwork, and spacious bathrooms with Italian ceramic tile and walk-in showers or tubs. A few have private terraces, and most face views of the vineyards and the sea. But what’s especially impressive is the hotel’s array of spaces and services designed for guests’ pleasure, including a swimming pool and sun deck, cherry orchards to wander through, and an open-air fire pit for relaxing over a glass of wine.
A lavish breakfast buffet is served until noon, afternoon tea service starts not long after, and private picnics in the vineyards, complete with quilts and pillows, can be arranged on short notice. The house specialty is a a crisp Rebula that’s great any time of day — an as aperitif, paired with seafood at lunch or dinner, or for sipping under the stars — and the estate’s bike manager happily arranges cycling tours with tastings in the surrounding wine country.
