The idea of Provence doesn’t generally need much in the way of a sales pitch. The South of France’s most famous region is known globally for its gastronomy, its access to the Mediterranean, and its role in the film industry, and it needs little introduction. But if the sheer scale of French Riviera tourism causes you to shudder, allow us to introduce you to the quieter, (relatively) undiscovered side of this region. Mas des Herbes Blanches Hôtel & Spa thinks of itself as the region’s best-kept secret.

It looks onto the picturesque villages of the Luberon region — accessible to Provençal cities like Avignon, Aix, and Marseilles, certainly, but still a world away from the tourist throngs. Drive up the hillside this hotel occupies, take in its stone facade, smell the rosemary and lavender that the region is known for, and you’ll realize you’ve stumbled into the heart of Provence. The hotel itself looks like it’s been operating under the Provençal sun for generations (in the best possible way). In reality, it’s been welcoming guests for about four decades and received a full-scale renovation in 2016 — so the modern touches you’d expect from a contemporary luxury hotel are decidedly in place. Today there are 33 guest rooms and 15 suites, all bathed in exceptional natural light. Tasteful neutrals drive the decor, with striking red accents, all of which ensure the sun has center stage. The proprietors clearly want their guests to get the most out of the hotel’s location in the countryside. Upgrade to a pool suite for a private outdoor pool and terrace. But even a classic room includes an outdoor balcony with excellent views.

“Bathed in light” seems to be the running theme here, and it’s one of the major selling points of the luxurious Sothys spa on the premises. The same goes for the hotel restaurant — and if a sunny, welcoming dining room or in-house bistro aren't enough for you, take your meals out on the terrace overlooking the Luberon countryside. Local food, like Luberon rack of lamb, is your best bet: Mas des Herbes Blanches Hôtel & Spa makes sure a guest doesn’t have to leave the hotel to experience why chefs from Julia Child to Daniel Boulud have drawn culinary inspiration from this part of France.
