As the name may suggest, Macalister Mansion is an opulent reminder of Malaysia’s British colonial period, named for a Scottish governor who presided over Penang back when it was called Prince of Wales Island. Today this boutique hotel in historic George Town offers old-world grandeur, from the mosaic-lined swimming pool with a swim-up bar to an art collection with a range of pieces specifically commissioned for the space. There are just eight suites, outfitted in sleek blonde wood, glass panels, and crisp white linens.
