Earthy but refined, crisp and cool, shimmering white and gold — we’re talking about the famed white wines produced in Austria’s Wachau region, but the same words describe MALAT Weingut und Hotel, a boutique hotel set amid its vineyards. Built with locally sourced timber and stone on the south bank of the Danube, this modern hotel is the most recent addition to a family-run winery that’s been in business since 1722. The building is sleek and angular, but the interiors are warm and inviting, outfitted in natural materials and bathed in sunlight. Spacious split-level suites have parquet floors, separate living and sleeping areas, private patios, and floor-to-ceiling glass revealing views of rocky terraces, green hills, and the magnificent 11th-century Stift Göttweig monastery.
