With a prime location between the turquoise sea and Key West’s lively Old Town, Southernmost Beach Resort, named for its location at the southernmost point of the continental United States, has been a staple on the island’s hotel scene since it opened in the 1950s. But a recent style overhaul, plus the acquisition of a pair of restored Victorian houses next door — welcome additions to the hotel’s small collection of adults-only guesthouses — has breathed new life into the place. The refreshed look mixes midcentury modern with breezy tropical decor: traditional wood flooring with woven throw rugs, large windows facing the water or gardens with palm trees, and an oceanic color palette of bright white, cobalt blue, aquamarine, and coral.

Family-friendly rooms in the main buildings are simple but sophisticated, while the guesthouses, each run by its own innkeeper, offer more old-world character. Each is unique — some have charming pastel-hued bathrooms and vintage-inspired patterned wallpaper, others have romantic four-poster beds and private furnished patios overlooking the beach — but all operate in a bed-and-breakfast style, with a lavish spread laid out in the dining room each morning. All of the resort’s rooms have access to three beautiful outdoor pools, a spa and fitness center, a private beach, and a range of dining venues, including the poolside Pineapple Bar and the popular oceanfront Southernmost Beach Café. The restaurants, bars, shops, and art galleries of Duval Street are just a short stroll away.
