Right on Florence’s busy Piazza della Libertà, Ruby Bea is a stylish boutique hotel named after Dante Alighieri’s famous muse, Beatrice Portinari. While the porticoed 18th-century building is historic, the design is hardly traditional: the look is artful and edgy, Italian Renaissance with a modern twist, featuring sultry red velvet armchairs and displays of vintage binoculars in the lobby and a neon Bea + Dante sign elevated above the bar. It’s part of the Munich-based, design-focused Ruby Hotels group, who espouse a “lean luxury” concept throughout their collection of hotels in European cities. Here, it means compact and minimalist rooms with hardwood floors, fluffy white duvets, and custom bath products. Some larger loft-style rooms have private balconies, and maisonette rooms offer two levels of space.
