Just a few minutes up the coast from Elounda, on a hillside just outside of the village of Plaka, Phāea Blue marries timeless Cretan hospitality with glamorous, globetrotting elegance. Breezy, tranquil rooms, suites, and bungalows blend eggshell and nautical tones with locally crafted art objects, marble bathrooms, and private, furnished balconies. There’s also a freestanding, full-service villa, available in two- and three-bedroom orientations, for a more private and more luxurious experience.
There’s much to be said for remaining on site, thanks to the lovely swimming pool, the Anthós restaurant, and the more casual Blue Door Taverna. But to do so would be to miss out on a large part of Phāea Blue’s appeal. This is a hotel that specializes in experiential travel — be it a cooking lesson, an island-hopping sailing excursion, or a jaunt in a classic car, the concierge will arrange it all. Of particular note is the Phāea Farmers Feast, where guests pick fresh ingredients alongside the hotel’s chef before dining on a meal served around a communal table.
