A proper medieval castle on the shores of Lough Corrib, expanded by the Guinness family during the 19th century, Ashford Castle is one of a kind. And the task of turning it into a luxury hotel was one its current proprietors didn’t take lightly: in its new incarnation the castle’s historical atmosphere remains front and center even while its comforts have been adapted to the needs of modern luxury travelers.

Every room’s decoration is different, though they’re uniformly lavish, and furnished with unobtrusive modern amenities. Suites and staterooms expand in size and ambition; the most luxurious are the ones named for Ted Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, as well as the Boathouse, a self-contained residence right on the lakeside.

As is typical of castle hotels, Ashford Castle’s attractions go far beyond the accommodations; a partial list will have to suffice. Restaurants range from the diner-style Stanley’s to the formal George V Dining Room; tea is served in the Connaught Room, and drinks in the Prince of Wales Bar. The Spa at Ashford Castle is a perennial award-winner, and on-site activities range from tennis, shooting, and golf to horseback riding and multiple forms of boating, as well as the oldest falconry school in Ireland.
