Sri Lankan hotels are among our favorites, from the modernist beach cottages to the tea plantations of the interior. Maniumpathy, however, is something a little bit different — and a classic, at the same time. This stately home, right in the heart of one of Colombo’s most desirable neighborhoods, has belonged for five generations to a family from Jaffna, in the island’s north, and its eight suites are named for the women of the family, from Vasanthi and Anithra to Annapuranie, the 19th-century matriarch whose name graces the ground-floor master suite.

It’s the archetypal colonial-style grand residence, its interiors, though renovated, hewing closely to the original look, and furnished with vintage-style and genuine antique pieces. There’s nary a whiff of “tropical modernism” about it — this is pure traditional opulence, and while the comforts may have been updated over the course of the past century, the atmosphere remains essentially unchanged. It’s the same genteel calm you’ll enjoy in the garden and its small but lovely pool; and it’s the same genteel service you’ll enjoy throughout the hotel, where staffers typically outnumber guests, and especially at the dinner table, which specializes in Sri Lankan cooking of the Jaffna variety.
