There are a multitude of ways to experience the coast of Maine, but it’d be hard to find a better introduction than this one, just a few minutes from Portland, in Cape Elizabeth: the Inn by the Sea. It’s contemporary-classic in style but as crisp and fresh as a new build, and its rooms and suites are luxurious, but unpretentiously so. You’ll find gas fireplaces and/or heated floors, both of which are quite useful in the winter. And air conditioning is present as a matter of course, though the plentiful sea breeze is an essential part of the experience.

The look is stylish, but the atmosphere is exceedingly relaxed, not to mention thoroughly kid- and pet-friendly. And not only is the Inn luxe and tranquil, but it’s green to the core as well. The garden is fertilized with compost from the food service, and hotel’s energy needs are entirely satisfied by a solar farm, right down to the heated pool and the EV charging stations. They even plant a tree for every guest visit. So as you’re loafing about the grounds, dining al fresco on seasonal fare at Sea Glass, even taking the occasional spa treatment, you’re doing your part to keep the beach, the surf, and the surrounding wildlife habitats in tip-top shape.

How to Get There: Inn by the Sea is located on scenic Route 77 (Bowery Beach Road), approximately 15 minutes from Portland International Jetport (PWM). Daily direct flights service Portland from most major cities in the Northeast as well as Chicago and Atlanta. By car, Inn by the Sea is approximately 2 hours north of Boston.
