Most lodgings along the Col du Tourmalet are simple guesthouses. But the 2023 opening of Hotel La Voie Lactée signals a change. Located in the village of La Mongie, this luxury boutique hotel is directly across from the ski lift and the cable car to the Pic du Midi observatory, offering staggering views of the mountains from the airy ground-level lounge, restaurant, bar, and all of its guest rooms. The owners worked with architect Romain Thevenot to transform the five-story structure, formerly a family-run hotel, into a modern getaway that pays stylistic homage to the building’s past.

La Voie Lactée means “the Milky Way,” and rooms are named after astronomical features — galaxy, constellation, the Big Dipper — a reference to the spectacularly starry skies overhead at night, thanks to light pollution restrictions in the area. All rooms have oversized windows letting in abundant natural light, and many have private balconies overlooking the ski slopes. The interiors have a cozy mountain lodge look with a vintage twist: pale wood paneling, midnight blue accent walls, ceramic pendant lamps, retro armchairs, and charmingly tiled bathrooms with large round mirrors. Downstairs, the wellness area has an organic spa, a sauna, and a pair of open-air Nordic-style baths, while breakfast, afternoon tea, and après-ski drinks are served by a fireplace facing the mountains.
