Le Château des Forges sits just a ten-minute drive from the center of Angers but feels like a secluded country retreat thanks to its vast gardens and views of the surrounding valley. Once a private residence, the grand 19th-century castle has been transformed into an intimate 14-room hotel with facilities that encourage guests to slow down and switch off.

The heated outdoor pool comes with a view of Île Saint-Aubin on the nearby Mayenne river, and the hotel is home to its own botanical garden, vegetable garden, and a wooded park for nature walks. You might even spot sheep roaming. There’s no restaurant as such, but there are organic breakfasts and sharing plates and snacks available throughout the day or for light dinners, and the proximity to Angers means that city life and the buzz of restaurants and bars is never far away.
