There are country retreats, and there’s The Lodge at Primland. Not only is the hotel surrounded by verdant woodland and Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, but it also sits on its own 12,000-acre estate to fully immerse guests in nature. Most of the rooms are housed in the main lodge, which offers easy access to the majority of the facilities, but for more privacy there’s the option of the chalet-style Pinnacle suites, the cozy Fairway cottages, or the chance to live out childhood dreams by spending the night in the Tree Houses, which sit high up in the treetops with views across the woodland and the Dan River Gorge.

The three restaurants are rooted in the local terroir and Primland’s farm-to-table ethos and cater for different moods and occasions, from relaxed Southern classics at Stables Saloon to more gastronomic dishes at Leatherhead. The spa is another highlight, with a large pool that opens onto an outdoor terrace, and treatments courtesy of cult French brand Biologique Recherche. But wellness here isn’t just about pampering, it’s also about getting outdoors to enjoy the various hiking trails, kayaking, al fresco yoga classes, or a few rounds on the 18-hole golf course.
