Modern Design & Secluded
First came the surfers, then the official distinction as one of Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos, and finally, a wave of designers, chefs, and hoteliers, turning the once-quiet beach village of Todos Santos into a hip getaway on the Baja California peninsula. Among the numerous style-conscious lodgings on offer is Desierto Azul, a petite boutique hotel on a sun-baked stretch of land a few blocks back from the coastline.
Eco-friendly and minimalist, the hotel has just four cottage-like rooms set around a quiet saltwater pool. Inside, they’re open-concept, lined in polished concrete and artisan-made tiles. Each is unique, but they’re all outfitted with natural materials, from linen duvets to woven raffia lampshades. Standard features include workspaces, organic pour-over coffee stations, airy bathrooms that open to separate rainfall shower rooms, and private wooden pergolas with hammocks and outdoor lounge space with views of giant cacti and colorful desert flowers.
Desierto Azul doubles as a foodie hotspot: its gluten- and dairy-free bakery has a healthy breakfast menu and cold-pressed juices, and its plant-based cooking workshops are a popular offering. Mexican wines and mezcal-based cocktails are also served at the Conscious Bar, steps from the pool, and the town itself has a wide array of cafés, boutiques, restaurants, and bars, all minutes away on foot.

Stayed January 2025
The boutique hotel was just as described on their website. It was an amazing and rejuvenating stay. The suite was well appointed. The clean products were a joy to use - it was the first time I didn't have to bring my own clean toiletry products on vacation. Small touches like an essential oil diffuser running in the room was such a pleasant surprise. The breakfast offering was perfect! Even for someone with a lot of dietary restrictions, it worked well for me. The staff we interacted with were all so great. Starting with Jose, the manager, who was professional and extremely knowledgeable about the town of Todos Santos. He's just a great person who is easy to chat with. Then there was sweet and helpful Marta, the staffer who made our delicious avocado toasts a work of art. She also does the housekeeping for the rooms. Finally there is Bruno, a new addition to the team at the front desk. He is a recent transplant from California, so he is well versed with American tourists. The grounds are kept immaculately by others. The saltwater pool is such a great addition! I never swim in hotel pools because of the toxic chlorine. But this pool is clean and safe. The hotel even has their own water filtration system (procured from the U.S.), so the water coming out of the tap is completely safe to drink. I have a hospital grade water filter at home, so something like this was so nice to have. No need to buy bottled water from stores during your trip. Just remember to bring a reusable water bottle from home. One big bonus is the proximity of the hotel to the sea turtle sanctuary. It's a quick 5min drive. If you end up signing up for the Biologist For a Day program (which we fully recommend), you can even go back to the hotel for a break in between your assigned rounds checking the greenhouse nests. Even nearly a month after our stay ended, I find my thoughts still wander fondly back to the hotel. Highly recommend the hotel and would stay here in a heartbe
