One MICHELIN Key · A very special stay
Pug Seal’s inventive, pocket-sized boutique B&Bs feel like perfect little secrets in the vastness of Mexico City — in the compact historical center of Oaxaca City, however, a 20-suite boutique hotel looms larger, just by comparison with its surroundings. Not to worry: Pug Seal Oaxaca is just as tranquil, just as residential in atmosphere as its cousins in the capital, designed as it is around a central courtyard decorated with colorful murals.

The suites themselves combine high-design furniture and up-to-date boutique-hotel comforts with historic architectural details and more murals. There’s plenty of color, and plenty of richly weathered, handmade texture to supply visual and tactile interest. You’ll have a smart TV and a coffee-making station as well as local snacks and drinks, but the central appeal is the sense of calm, confident tranquility.

And while there’s an impressive breakfast spread, there’s no in-house restaurant — but in a city as flavorful as Oaxaca, that’s no drawback. Unless you’re staying here for a month or more, it’s not at all likely that you’ll want to eat the same thing twice.

The hotel itself was in a perfect location. The common areas were gorgeous, breakfast was delicious, and the staff was lovely. However, the room itself was like a dungeon. No windows... all concrete (which I certainly think can be cool, especially with the decor they used - but with no windows and being dimly lit it felt like staying in a basement). The rooms all open up to the main courtyard, so there's really no way to get natural light and privacy unless you have one of the street side upper rooms. For the price, I had an issue with this. Were this hotel priced lower, it would have felt fine. During my stay there was construction next door, and the staff (and Tablet) was kind enough to move me to one of the street side rooms on the 2nd floor. The room was a night and day difference with windows and natural light (however normally a much higher price when booking). Regardless, the hotel itself was lovely and beautiful - however, I would not book again unless I had one of the rooms facing the street.

Great service, friendly staff, superb chilled vibe. Lots of things available to do and staff provide a lot of useful information on the city and its surroundings
