Traditional Elegance & Quiet
This six-room mansion in Quito's UNESCO-listed Old Town is owned and operated by Mario and Blanca, a couple who ran a homestay for international students for 15 years before opening their boutique hotel in 2014. The century-old townhouse wraps around a central atrium, with rooms themed after Ecuadorian fruits, an eccentric choice that somehow works. Blanca handles the orchids and breakfast procurement, while Mario, a psychologist and marathon runner, offers guided running tours of the city for guests willing to brave the 9,000-foot elevation. It is the rare small hotel where the owners' presence enhances more than intrudes, a balance most properties never achieve.
