As Punta del Este continues to boom, cementing its status as the Uruguayan Riviera, the region’s longtime devotees can’t help but mourn the loss of character that inevitably accompanies an exploding market. One of them, fortunately, decided to do something about it. Aaron Hojman owns a local antiques business, and in the beach town of La Barra, just outside Punta proper, he’s opened the delightful Casa Zinc, which packs several lifetimes’ worth of personality into a single small hotel.
Well-chosen antiques, salvaged materials and vintage pieces seem to make up the entirety of Casa Zinc’s interiors, in styles ranging from country kitchens to mid-century architectural pieces and industrial cast-offs. The rich, weathered textures and the patina of age drip with character, in stark contrast to Punta’s glossy minimalist hotel rooms. It’s a brilliant couples’ escape, and it’s family-friendly, to a point, at least for kids who are capable of some self-supervision.
As for resort-style amenities, well, you know where to look for those. This place gets by on atmosphere. The communal-style dining room will put you in closer touch with your neighbors than would the typical hotel restaurant, a detail that’s emblematic of the thoughtful approach Casa Zinc takes to ensuring its guests mix well.
