Contemporary Classic & Lively
In Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood, a medieval arch connects the riverfront square Campo das Cebolas and the busy blocks around the cathedral. Built by ancient Romans, the passageway is even older than the surrounding building, a 12th-century landmark with a cheerful yellow Pombaline-style façade — and all of it, after extensive restorations, is part of AlmaLusa Alfama. This boutique hotel is the third offering from Almalusa, a Portuguese brand devoted to rescuing historic structures and turning them into stylish contemporary hotels.
Great care was taken to preserve the building’s old-world charm, especially on the ground level, with its curving glass panels, original woodwork, and the all-day Delfina Café, featuring pale exposed-brick walls, rustic beamed ceilings, and tables that spill out onto the plaza. Rooms are light-filled and modern, outfitted in white and earth tones with delicate botanical murals, while sleek bathrooms are tiled in black and white. Nearly every detail, from high-end mattresses and luxurious cotton linens to fragrant Benamôr bath products, is Portuguese-made. Smaller rooms face the cathedral or an interior courtyard, while suites have views over the Tagus River. There’s no pool or spa, but you won’t miss it; when it comes to exploring Lisbon’s quaint side streets, shops, and cafés, it’s hard to beat the perfect location.
