Contemporary Classic & Lively
The first boutique hotels in Amsterdam were avant-garde affairs, parlaying the success of modern Dutch design into a hotel scene straight out of the future. Hotel Mercier, however, belongs to a later generation, one that integrates Amsterdam’s historical charms with eclectic contemporary decoration and the kind of personality-driven boutique hospitality

Here contemporary most definitely doesn’t mean modern. The Mercier’s style is retro, in keeping with its Art Deco heritage, though it takes certain postmodern liberties — it’s brighter, livelier, and more colorful than a strictly correct period piece would be. Nevertheless, it’s almost ornate in its elegance, miles from the minimalism of the city’s first wave of boutique hotels.

The rooms are a heady mix of antique references and contemporary design and art, and they range from the refreshingly honest Small Double to the positively capacious Junior Suite and the extra-tall Bridal Suite, up under the eaves. At all levels they’re full of modern comforts, with walk-in showers and convenient bedside electronics. Add to this an all-day café called Bonboon and you’ve got a delightfully modest and impressively well-executed little boutique hotel.

We found this hotel through Tablet when the beautiful, but eclectic place where we had previously stayed in Amsterdam was scheduled to be under renovation. As an architect I very much appreciated the care, detailing, colours etc that have gone into The Mercier’s design. The staff were exceptionally helpful and the breakfasts are among the best we have had in several European vacations. The wi-fi was solid - much better than most North American places. The location is also very good. There are a couple of things that could be improved. First, there needs to be the addition of an armoir / drawers in the room. At this price point we don’t expect to need to live out of our suitcase - the folding screen with the coat hooks is entirely inadequate. Second, the shampoo / conditioner available in pretty much all hotels was either insufficient or missing entirely - we had to go out and buy our own conditioner. Lastly, although we were here on vacation, if you happened to be on business the lack of a desk would be problematic. The main floor study / library would likely be OK, but missing any privacy. Having said all this we had a great stay and could certainly recommend The Mercier.
