Contemporary Classic & Happening
The original Gurney’s, in the Long Island beach town of Montauk, was a masterful reinvention of an 80-year-old seaside hotel, and it’s been a major fixture on the Hamptons scene since its rebirth a few short years ago. It’s hard to imagine topping it, but you’ll never know if you don’t try. Gurney’s Newport Resort & Marina, in the celebrated Rhode Island vacation town, does its level best to re-create the magic on Narragansett Bay.

It’s no tentative half-measure sort of place — Gurney’s Newport, with over 200 rooms, is almost twice the size of the original, situated on ten acres of waterfront land. Its raw material, an ordinary chain hotel, may have been a little less rich in history than the Montauk Gurney’s was, but what’s replaced it has character to spare. The rooms and suites are visually restrained, but unapologetically luxurious, all of them with views of the water.

Impressive as they are, the real story here is the social life. Scarpetta, the Italian restaurant, is the main attraction at night, with the Regent Lounge in a supporting role; in the morning, Corso Coffee is an essential stop, and the Pineapple Club serves casual fare by the pool. Other inducements include the Seawater Spa, multiple wedding venues, and of course the marina, in case you’re of a mind to arrive by sea rather than land.
