Modern Design & Quiet
Iceland has long had a small but vibrant boutique-hotel scene, but the island’s hoteliers were slower to embrace high-luxury hospitality. That’s changed now, but in this country luxury is always tempered by tasteful understatement — which is certainly the vibe at Black Sand Hotel, on Iceland’s south coast, 40 minutes’ drive from Reykjavík.

Lovers of austere natural beauty will be drawn to the black-sand beach from which the hotel takes its name, and architecture and design fans will appreciate the hotel’s low-profile structure and minimalist clean lines. Its sparsely decorated interiors are warmed by rich textures and by high-quality fixtures and furnishings, which include DUX beds dressed in Quagliotti linens.

The restaurant makes much of Iceland’s local ingredients — lamb, seafood, roots — and serves diners in front of floor-to-ceiling windows with direct views over the beach. And as magical as the setting is, it’s also a jumping-off point for excursions in Iceland’s south and beyond, to see attractions that range from waterfalls and geysers to the famous Northern Lights.
