Contemporary Classic & Quiet
The town of San Ignacio is one of the capitals of rainforest tourism in Belize, and the surrounding area is home to a couple of great eco-lodges. Among the in-town options, however, there’s nothing quite like the San Ignacio Resort Hotel. First of all, the setting: though central, it’s a 17-acre riverside estate, a bona fide parcel of jungle within the city limits, with its own on-site iguana conservation project — surely not something most hotels can say.

It’s also family-owned and operated, and has been since 1976. And while that’s not always a guarantee of a superior experience, your hosts’ commitment is evident — they’ve kept the place very much up to date. The rooms range from cozy and comfortable to spacious and subtly stylish, and the better ones have views of the jungle canopy or the Macal River.

The Running W Steakhouse & Restaurant features meats from the family ranch, and the Lobby Bar is something of a local hotspot, with live music on some weekend nights. From here you’d be remiss if you didn’t explore the Belizean rainforest — while the estate and its iguana habitat are impressive, you’ll want to venture further afield as well, and the hotel is happy to arrange tours and excursions.
