Modern Design & Lively
Once an important stop on the Silk Road, the medieval Rajasthani city of Bikaner is sometimes referred to as a jewel in the desert. Several of its palaces have been converted into hotels, like the opulent home of the last Maharaja, who died without a male heir in 2003, effectively ending the city’s royal lineage. His sumptuous Art Deco-style residence was converted into Narendra Bhawan, a one-of-a-kind, over-the-top luxury hotel that’s an unmistakable reminder of Bikaner’s glittering heyday.

The eclectic interiors reflect the prince’s penchant for world travel, with Portuguese tiles, English antiques, rich velvet upholstery, and locally crafted terrazzo floors, and while rooms are uniquely decorated, they’re all lavishly appointed with king-sized beds and rare art objects. Many have soaking tubs and spacious living rooms with vintage bar carts. The palace’s elegant ground-level parlors have been transformed into a glamorous bar, an upscale restaurant, and a pastry shop, while up on the rooftop, an infinity pool overlooks the city’s old quarter.
