7 Restaurants
Love spice? Here are eight restaurants in Singapore that serve the best spicy food.
Updated on 04 July 2024

Singapore’s proximity to many other Southeast Asian countries, coupled by its bustling economy and trade development, makes it a dining paradise that brings Asian food cultures together — may it be Indian, Nyonya, Chinese, or a fusion of Chinese and Malaysian.

Because of its closeness to the equator, Singapore also experiences an endless summer all year round. Spicy food, with its combination of chilies, spices, and sauces, is also naturally favoured by the locals because of its appetising and mouth-watering qualities.

Our MICHELIN Inspectors are always excited to comb through the streets of Singapore, searching for the best fiery chilli crabs, savoury sambal stingrays, curry fish heads, and other spicy delicacies. Here are eight of their favourite restaurants and stalls to enjoy spicy food in Singapore.

Chilli Padi (Joo Chiat)
#01-03, 11 Joo Chiat Place, 427744 Singapore
$$ · Peranakan

The interiors at Chilli Padi (Joo Chiat) are full of old-school Nyonya décor, and among the many dishes on the menu, the Curry Assam Ikan (or fish curry) is the most popular item. The entire fish is dipped in a sour curry with vegetables such as okra and eggplant, resulting to tender meat that's rich in taste. It's appetising and delicious at the same time.

Hjh Maimunah (Jalan Pisang)
11 & 15 Jalan Pisang, 199078 Singapore
$ · Malaysian

Serving authentic and affordable Malaysian cuisine, Hjh Maimunah along Jalan Pisang is home to a lot of dishes, with the Beef Rendang being one of the more popular ones. It comes with a thick sauce that's sweet, spicy, and delicious.

Keng Eng Kee (Bukit Merah)
Blk 124, #01-136, Bukit Merah Lane 1, 150124 Singapore
$ · Singaporean

One of the famous local coffee shops in Singapore, Keng Eng Kee might be simple in design, but what it lacks in interiors, it makes up with its food. The restaurant attracts a large number of gourmets with its delicious crab dishes, especially the classic and popular ones such as the Chilli Crab and the Black Pepper Crab. The former is made with live crab that's fried in a savoury sauce that's both sweet and spicy.

Mellben Seafood (Ang Mo Kio)
Block 232, #01-1222, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3, 560232 Singapore
$$ · Seafood

The main dish to order here is the crab. When diners arrive at Mellben Seafood, the first order of business is to select the crabs and the cooking style, with more than 14 recipes to choose from. Chilli crab (pictured on the left) is one of the more popular styles here, and the sauce comes thick and savoury. With the sauce leaning more on the sweeter side, the crab is fresh, sweet, and filled with eggs. Remember to order the mantou to dip in the sauce!

Muthu's Curry
#01-01, 138 Race Course Road, 218591 Singapore
$$ · Indian

Established in 1969, this Indian restaurant is highly popular with locals. Fish Head Curry is one of their signature dishes where the delicious fish head is dipped in a fragrant curry that's super spicy. Don't forget to eat it with the naan!

Eminent Frog Porridge & Seafood (Lor 19)
Geylang Lorong 19, 323 Geylang Road, 389359 Singapore
$ · Street Food

Located along Geylang Road, the Kung Pao Frog (pictured on the right) here is very popular. Plump frog pieces are cooked in a delicious soy sauce and garnished with chives. Diners here love to pair the Kung Pao Frog with plain porridge, which is light and dense, making it a memorable accompaniment with the fragrant frog dish.

Jiao Cai Seafood
Yishun Park Hawker Centre, #01-39, 51 Yishun Avenue 11, 768867 Singapore
$ · Street Food

Tucked away in the Yishun Park Hawker Centre, Jiao Cai Seafood serves a variety of sizzling seafood dishes that are cooked to order. The Sambal Stingray (pictured on the left) here is highly recommended. The stingray is first marinated in a thick sambal sauce before being slow-roasted. The result is stingray that's tender and smoky. It is served with more of the spicy sambal sauce, which is made in-house.
