Clásico contemporáneo y Tranquilo
For serious skiers, the Austrian resort village of Lech am Arlberg needs no introduction. For the rest of us — those of us who might confuse St. Anton with St. Moritz, those who wouldn’t attempt a black diamond run, let alone venture off-piste — a bit of artful name-dropping should do the trick. Lech was the preferred ski destination of Diana, Princess of Wales, as well as the former Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. Non-royals (hallo, Tom Cruise) like it too, but you get the picture. It’s an exclusive resort, and the impossibly picturesque village is old as the hills, no pun intended: it was founded by the Swiss in the 14th century.

Needless to say, there are a few grand hotels in the Arlberg area, and more than a few luxurious chalets available for private rental. Kristiania Lech, a small hotel located at the foot of the mountains, in a relatively secluded spot just outside of town, aims to bring together the best of both. With 29 individually decorated guest rooms, it feels more like a private residence than a cookie-cutter hotel. True, some of the thematic decor, ranging from antique Chinese to French boudoir, might seem a little over-the-top for a ski trip. But that’s for you to decide, according to the helpful staff at Kristiania Lech, which is why the hotel also offers rooms and suites decorated in a classic Alpine style, plus dedicated butlers to curate your indoor and outdoor experiences. (A bath butler? Yes, please.) Standard in-room features include original artwork, flat-screen TVs, complimentary minibars, and yoga mats.

Kristiania Lech has a good spa, plus several restaurants and bars — certainly an advantage of staying in a hotel versus a private chalet, especially during a snowstorm. Otto Wagner is the most formal dining venue; there’s also a French bistro and a traditional Austrian eatery with an open fireplace, a cozy place for après-ski fondue. When it’s not freezing out, you can have lunch or coffee on the hotel’s sunny terrace. When it is, there’s an elegant lobby lounge, complete with a Steinway piano, afternoon tea service, and a martini menu.

The ski lifts, carrying you up to some of the finest runs in the world, plus magical views over the snow-covered village, are a short stroll away. The ten-minute walk isn’t much, but it can feel like it if you’re lugging ski equipment — luckily, the hotel also offers shuttle service from the front door. You’ll want to make it back to Kristiania Lech for a nightcap, at the very least: there happen to be seven thousand bottles of wine stored in the rock below the hotel, enough to impress movie stars, maybe even a royal or two.

Please note: Kristiania Lech is a seasonal hotel, and is open from December 3 through April 19.

How to get there: Kristiania Lech is located two and a half hours by train from Zürich via Langen am Arlberg, or just over two hours by car (weather permitting).
