South Beach Camps Bay

In the travel business the words “South Beach” generally refer to South Florida, for this one we travel all the way to South Africa. The place is Cape Town, specifically the upscale coastal suburb of Camps Bay, where South Beach Camps Bay Hotel presides over a couple of famous beaches and an extraordinary view of the waters of the South Atlantic.

There’s a bit of the other South Beach in the design of the hotel, a pair of converted apartment buildings — there’s more than a little bit of 20th-century modernism about the interiors, with their white-and-cream palette and their accents in marine tones. The suites are rather more like apartments than typical hotel rooms, with plenty of space and a proper kitchen, complete with a full-sized fridge that’s stocked for breakfast.

The flip side of the full kitchen is that there’s no restaurant; however, not only are you a few minutes’ walk from the beach, you’re even closer to the restaurants on Victoria Road. Closer still is the hotel’s own rooftop pool, which is open to guests only, and is thus a truly tranquil escape. And you’re by no means confined to Camps Bay for the duration of your stay — South Beach’s concierge can arrange anything from day cruises to multi-day safaris.
