Contemporary Classic & Lively
Washington D.C.’s Phoenix Park Hotel isn’t overly impressed with its location at the heart of American history. It’s named for a park in Dublin, and is, in fact, owned by an Irish concern. There’s plenty of Americana to go around in the neighborhood — you’re a few blocks from the Capitol, and more or less right next to Union Station — but once you’re inside Phoenix Park it’s all warm Irish hospitality, thanks in no small part to the Dubliner, which is more or less everything you’d imagine if you were to close your eyes and wish for an Irish pub and restaurant.

Fortunately, an authentically Irish hotel doesn’t have to hammer the point home by drenching the guest rooms in four-leaf-clover kitsch. The dominant color here is a deep indigo, against monochrome silver and white. The look is elegant, contemporary, but still classic — stylish enough to appeal to the fashion-minded, yet eminently comfortable for D.C.’s more stylistically conservative elements as well. Though lobbyists and the like will opt for more extravagant (and duller) luxury digs, the rest of us will appreciate some authentic personality, especially this close to downtown, the National Mall, and Capitol Hill.
