One MICHELIN Key · A very special stay
An 18th-century shipowner’s mansion in the old port of La Rochelle is the setting for La Villa Grand Voile, a Relaix & Châteaux hotel with some impressive culinary connections. Here chef Christopher Coutanceau and sommelier Nicolas Brossard have crafted a small and extraordinarily stylish escape, a hotel whose eleven rooms and suites combine Art Deco and maritime influences with a keen contemporary eye and a full complement of subtle modern luxuries.
Strictly as a lodging it’s an impressively unique experience, and displays the sort of attention to detail that’s characteristic of the finest small-scale boutique hotels. The service is personal but still professional, and the atmosphere is warm but as private as you need it to be. It would stand on its own quite confidently without its restaurants; fortunately, it doesn’t have to.
Walk a few blocks toward the water and you’ll find yourself at the Plage de la Concurrence, the site of the Restaurant Christopher Coutanceau, a two-MICHELIN-Star restaurant since 1986 — back when Christopher’s father Richard was head chef. And right next door is the more casual La Yole de Chris, a marine-themed bistro; both restaurants, naturally, feature the wine selections and cocktail creations of maître de maison Nicolas Brossard.
