Cutting-Edge & Happening
Ovolo Nishi occupies three floors of the mixed-use Nishi building, which is by some distance the most memorable landmark in Canberra’s emerging cultural district of New Acton. The building is also home to an impressive contemporary art gallery, a bike shop, a pilates studio, a spa, and an art-house cinema — which is the long way of saying it’s the perfect location for what has to be the hippest hotel in town.

The rooms go all-in on organic warmth, full of reclaimed wood, roughly textured concrete, and restored vintage furniture. And though they don’t beat you over the head with ostentatious opulence, they’re luxurious as well — plush beds, proper linens, Aesop products in the bathrooms. The hotel’s social life is a lively one, taking advantage of all of Nishi’s attractions, which include a café, a couple of bars, and a small handful of restaurants. We’d go so far as to say every city could use something like this — and if you’re still thinking of Canberra as a sleepy government town, this will be the hotel that changes your mind.
