Barceló Emperatriz
Calle de López de Hoyos, 4, Madrid, Spain
Salamanca Quarter

Contemporary Classic 和 Lively
Madrid’s Barceló Emperatriz is inspired by the Empress Eugénie de Montijo, wife of Napoleon III, but more concretely, it’s aimed at today’s empresses — the female half of the five-star-hotel clientele, or anyone who wants the professional service and polished comforts of a modern luxury hotel in a color scheme that departs from the usual business-formal black and brown.
The 146 rooms are thoroughly contemporary, all refinement with mirrored panels, pendant lighting, discreet molding, and a tasteful transition from wood-grain accents in the bedroom to marble (and more well-lit mirrors) in the bathroom. Sleek Capitone armchairs and luxe king beds speak to comfort and poise in the same breath, perfectly restful after a day roaming the neighborhood’s trendsetting boutiques and restaurants. Free wi-fi and an all-in-one media panel ensure full connectivity if you wish; soundproofing and heavy curtains step in if you don’t. If you’re like us and sometimes prefer to be able to take it all in from a distance, spring for an upper-tier room for a private balcony or terrace overlooking the Paseo de la Castellana.
Downstairs, Mutis serves sculpted gourmet cuisine in a room that echoes the bedrooms’ wood, marble, and floral notes, with a focus on balancing healthy eating and indulgence on one plate. Feel free, of course, to emphasize the latter at the bi-level bar. And, why not, over fresh churros at the daily breakfast spread. Salamanca could stand to loosen up a little, isn’t that the point?
