Contemporary Classic 和 Quiet

The northern coast of Brazil is perhaps less well known than Rio or Bahia, but it’s not exactly a secret: the windswept dunes of Jericoacoara and the equally windswept waters of Jericoacoara Beach are famous among kitesurfers and adventuring types. You don’t have to go far, though, to get back to that undiscovered-paradise feeling. On the fringes of Preá, the next town to the east, on an unspoiled stretch of white sand, is Casana, a tiny, laid-back boutique hotel comprising little more than a handful of bungalows set just a few yards back from the beach.

The style is contemporary, but sensitive to local tradition, which means thatched roofs, plenty of wood, and up-to-date comforts like air conditioning, wi-fi, and extravagantly relaxing bathrooms. Some add plunge pools, and all sprawl out over a minimum of 80 square meters. And whether or not you’ve got your own pool, there’s always the hotel’s main pool, a beautiful black-bottomed affair that creates a mirror effect on the surface of the water. There’s a gym, a kite lounge — like a ski shop, but for kitesurfing — as well as a restaurant, a pool bar, and a beach bar, all serving upscale cocktails and creative dishes seasoned with herbs from the hotel’s own organic garden.
