Chicago’s Hotel Felix takes its name’s Latin meaning seriously. This hotel is all about happiness, which is a worthy goal if we’ve ever heard one. It helps if you’re into green hospitality — Hotel Felix has Silver LEED certification, the first in the city, thanks to measures encompassing everything from southern-exposure sunshine to high-tech energy reducing heating and lighting, and even its artworks are made from recycled and reclaimed materials. And it helps if your idea of a boutique hotel is something unpretentious, a little understated, with the occasional nod to Chicago’s long history of modernist architecture and design.
Felix occupies a classic brick building whose structure was essentially preserved in the renovation — another green measure, as it saved quite a lot of building material from the landfill. Inside it’s contemporary as can be, however, with luxe comforts and the latest electronics. Amenities include a fitness center, a lobby lounge and a business center, as well as the use of the spa next door at the Godfrey Chicago. For lunch, dinner, or drinks, there’s Troquet, an indoor-outdoor French bistro with a moody bar and lounge of its own. Meanwhile, in the morning, there’s Big Shoulders Coffee Shop — and from there you’re ready to hit the streets of River North, the Felix’s downtown neighborhood.
