Chiang Mai is where you go to immerse yourself in the history and culture of northern Thailand, but not every hotel is a trip back in time: Sala Lanna tempers its historical influences with substantial contemporary luxury-boutique comforts and a fair bit of modern design as well — there’s no mistaking the setting as classic riverside Chiang Mai, even without indulging in colonial-style kitsch. Many rooms look out at the river from their balconies, though the best view in the house might be the one from the poolside rooftop bar, an evening complement to Wanlamun Rim Nam, the hotel’s all-day modern-Thai restaurant.
