Though it predates the boutique-hotel boom, Vilalara Thalassa Resort looks right at home among the wave of new Portuguese luxury resorts; its south-facing setting, high above a beach in the Algarve, is spectacular. Its buildings are tucked into acres of gardens, and surrounded by no fewer than five swimming pools, as well as an extensive spa complex. Vilalara’s suites and apartments are spacious and well-equipped, and they’re contemporary in style, if a bit on the subtle side. The hotel’s restaurants include a poolside grill and lounge as well as chef Pedro Sequeira’s gastronomic B&G.
