When it comes to Sicilian hospitality, glossy high design is hardly the first idiom that comes to mind. As the island’s economy has developed, Sicily’s general atmosphere of rustic earthiness has gone from stigma to selling point. That’s true of Taormina, whose old town center is as pleasantly weathered as any in southern Italy. But once inside the old Metropole Taormina Maison d’Hôtes, behind that 18th-century grand-hotel facade, it’s another story entirely.

This was a bastion of old-world splendor, as Taormina has long been among Sicily’s first tourist stops. It was closed for the better part of forty years, and now that it’s re-opened, its interiors are almost unrecognizable. This is Italian style at its most contemporary — not modern, exactly, as the plentiful marble and well-selected antiques will attest, but the lines are clean, the palette focused, and the furnishings by Poltrona Frau are anything but old-fashioned.

Most of the twenty-three rooms and suites face out to sea, and all have access, naturally, to the spa and to the infinity pool with its seamless view over the Bay of Naxos. It’s all the sophistication you’d expect from contemporary, urban Italy — transplanted to the sublime and decidedly un-metropolitan site of Taormina’s old Metropole.

Amazing customer service from the hotel manager Josefina and the entire staff. There was an issue with my room the first night and they went out of their way to make it up to me. The terrace bar and the pool deck are fantastic.

The location is exceptional, with lovely public spaces facing the sea. The hotel feels intimate and exclusive, with very personalized service. Special thanks to the barman who introduced us to quite remarkable local gin and amaro (separately), during evening cocktails on the terrace overlooking the Mediterranean. Breakfast -- both the food options and the setting -- was remarkable.

Cet hôtel est un vrai bijou à Taormina. Son emplacement est tout simplement parfait, en plein coeur de la ville mais sans subir le bruit car l'ensemble est ouvert sur la mer. L’aménagement et la décoration de l’accueil, du lobby, du restaurant et du bar sont fait avec beaucoup de goût et de soin, dans le souci du détail. L’alliance du charme et du moderne. Une atmosphère d’élégance pure se dégage à votre arrivée et se confirme dans la chambre. Mais, au-delà des infrastructures superbes, il y a les personnes qui travaillent dans cet hôtel qui ont fait de ce séjour un moment d’exception. Tous, de la direction (Merci à Gaetano pour son accueil), de l’accueil, du bar au restaurant ainsi que les femmes de ménage, étaient d’une gentillesse, d’un professionnalisme et d’une prévenance incroyable. Pour notre chambre, ils ont supplanté toutes nos attentes en nous faisant la surprise d’une très belle suite à la vue mer magnifique! La décoration de la chambre était parfaite. Pure, moderne, pleine de charme et de luxe (marbre superbe). Le coin salon, la chambre et la salle de bain étaient spacieux et très bien aménagés. Le balcon avec sa vue époustouflante sur la mer nous permettait de profiter de la beauté de la baie de Taormina. La belle piscine et le solarium offraient une détente complète grâce à un service bar et restauration aux petits soins et plein d’efficacité. Nous adorions prendre l’apéritif au bar de l’hôtel en fin de journée ou en soirée. L’élégance du lieu, l’atmosphère charmante et l'efficacité des personnes en faisait un très bon moment.
