Deux Clefs MICHELIN · Un séjour exceptionnel
Amid plenty of competition in Playa del Carmen, Palmaïa, the House of AïA, styles itself as no mere hotel, but a “wellness enclave,” and sets itself apart from the crowd with an intense devotion to nature, health, and spiritual well-being. The aim is to deliver all the luxury of a more traditional resort, but in a way that’s both environmentally responsible and spiritually edifying — and in Palmaïa’s capable hands it’s an eminently achievable goal.
With 234 suites this is no small hotel, but each of its units feels like a private wellness enclave unto itself, designed in an attractive contemporary-indigenous style and featuring, for the most part, either direct ocean views or swim-out access to one of the resort’s many pools. And in a move that will be welcome news to couples on holiday sans kids, the hotel features special accommodations for families as well as separate adults-only facilities.
The restaurants’ menus are vegan by default, though exceptions are freely made; the venues include Japanese and Mediterranean options as well as upscale plant-based Mexican cooking. Meanwhile the Atlantis Spa incorporates Maya and Ayurvedic philosophies, and guests may choose between uncomplicated physical relaxation, on the beach or by the poolside, and a number of activities ranging from dance and yoga classes to shamanic rituals, astrology sessions, and beyond.
