Saint-Rémy-de-Provence has more than a few charming places to stay, but Le Vallon de Valrugues & Spa, housed in a Greco-Roman-style manor in a forested park just outside the village, might be the most luxurious. No one’s reinventing the wheel here — with its formal restaurant, elegant guest rooms, and afternoon tea service, the hotel is the epitome of Provençal refinement — but there’s something to be said for sticking with the classic approach.
Rooms are simple and sophisticated with king-sized beds made up in fine monogrammed linens, wooden writing desks, and modern bathrooms with tubs and plush robes. Many open onto private terraces, and suites have outdoor Jacuzzis or plunge pools.
Le Vallon de Valrugues is a good base for exploring the surrounding Alpilles Regional Natural Park, but there’s plenty to do without leaving the property: the grounds feature pétanque courts and a beautiful outdoor swimming pool that’s heated from April to October, while a luminous indoor pool, part of the spa, stays open year-round. In addition to the main restaurant, the hotel’s bistro serves lunch and dinner overlooking the gardens, and the stylish open-all-day bar hosts live music twice a week. It’s a short stroll into town or an even quicker ride on the hotel’s complimentary shuttle.
