If your first impression is that something looks a little bit different about Yoo2 Rio de Janeiro, rest assured, your eyes do not deceive you. This is the first hotel by the London-based Yoo Design Studio, and while it would be a big stretch to call it quintessentially English, there’s a bold, vibrant graphic sensibility — murals, street art, colorful prints — that sets it apart from the earth-toned seriousness you’ll find in many of Rio’s other high-end boutique hotels.

All the same, there’s no mistaking the fact that this is Brazil, especially in the bedrooms, where palm-tree skyscapes adorn the ceilings. There’s plentiful sunshine through wall-wide windows, and, if you’re on the right side of the hotel, views of Sugar Loaf and/or Corcovado Mountain. Themed rooms and suites add space as well as some extra design flair, as well as some of the most direct views.

Meanwhile Cariocally Restaurant makes good on its slightly unwieldy portmanteau, serving the classic cuisine of Rio de Janeiro, made from local produce and locally caught seafood, all under the direction of the highly regarded chef, Marcelo Schambeck. His seafood-based tapas dishes also accompany the cocktails at the rooftop bar, which, perhaps unsurprisingly, features the most inspiring views in the house.
