Stand in the streets of Istanbul in the evening, listening to the call to prayer from the city’s minarets, watching the sun set over two continents, and taking in the smells of sizzling kebap, and you’ll agree this city absolutely dazzles the senses. So it’s appropriate that a hotel that calls this bicontinental city home styles itself with the name FER, which means “radiant brightness” in the native tongue.
True to its name, this is a properly lit hotel. The Turkish sun finds its way indoors through large windows, a sky-lit atrium, and a high-design mix of light fixtures. All of this complements a neutral, calming color palette: the decor itself is 50 shades of brown, which lets the light, well, shine. This 56-room hotel is on the small size, but it’s not so small that you’ll lack anonymity if you want it. Service is up to you, too: the hotel staff takes a approach to hospitality depending on the wants and needs of each guest. (Incidentally, there are 56 rooms for a reason. It’s a nod to the 55 gates of Istanbul, the entrances carved into the city walls, circa 400 A.D. — FER thinks of itself as the 56th gate to the city.)
FER’s location, on the European side of the city, is very much a gateway to all the places you’ll want to visit during your visit. The famous Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia are both a scenic 10-minute walk east through the heart of historic Istanbul. The Grand Bazaar is a 10-minute walk in the opposite direction. But if you just want to gaze upon the city from a good perch, stop by FER’s rooftop restaurant — be sure to snag a table outside on the terrace.
