Modern Design & Lively
The Royal Hotel, originally designed in its entirety by the legendary Danish architect Arne Jacobsen, is often considered the world’s first true designer hotel. Jacobsen oversaw every aspect of the project — from the striking modernist high-rise inspired by New York’s Lever House, to the iconic furnishings created specifically for it, including the now-famous Egg and Swan chairs.
Following a full renovation, the hotel has evolved into a more contemporary property. While the Egg and Swan chairs still grace the lobby, most interiors have been updated — with the notable exception of Room 606, preserved in its original mid-century form as a tribute to Jacobsen’s vision.
From the outside, the building’s severe 1960s façade may feel imposing, but inside, its design allows for an abundance of natural light: rooms feature wall-to-wall windows, with sweeping corner views in some categories.
Adding a contemporary layer to the hotel’s offering is Issei, the on-site restaurant serving Nikkei cuisine — a refined and unexpected counterpoint to the building’s Nordic modernist legacy.
